LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this lesson, students explore fluid dynamics as they demonstrate some
of the odd properties of water. Students learn how to create a siphon,
a water hammer, and an Archemetes screw. Students create a siphon, and
make water defy gravity by using surface tension.
TIME REQUIRED: One Hour
OBJECTIVES:
Students learn about some of the technologies that were used by early
civilizations to control the flow of water. As students explore, they
will learn the principles behind how the siphon, the Archemetes screw
and the water hammer can cause water to flow against the pull of gravity.
In exploring surface tension, students see a dramatic demonstration of
how the molecular attraction of water molecules cause the contraction
of water surfaces.
FACILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
Outdoors; tables; hose bib/water spigot; and a warm day.
SAFETY:
A few drops of bleach will be used to disinfect the water containers the
water students will be using. Students are not allowed to drink the water.
