LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Using dry ice to attempt to cool 9 different materials, students observe
how fast the materials respond to a change temperature.
TIME REQUIRED: One Hour
OBJECTIVES:
Students learn about how plastic, foam, and wood are good thermal insulators
and how metals are good thermal conductors. This lesson demonstrates how
the scientific properties of materials help determine what humans use
them for.
FACILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
Tables for all participants.
SAFETY:
Participants are given a safety training on how to work with dry ice safely.
Students are advised to not allow the dry ice to come into contact with
their skin for more that a second. Students are advised to not press any
of the cubes against the dry ice for more than 5 seconds.
