Electricity and Magnetism

LESSON DESCRIPTION:

Students create magnetic creatures and habitats for their creatures to “live in” using magnets and a variety of art materials. As students play with their magnetic creatures, they discover the magnetic concepts of attraction, repulsion, and polarity.

TIME REQUIRED:
One Hour

OBJECTIVES:
Students understand the concepts of repulsion and polarity. They also learn how magnets are made and which common metals are and are not attracted to magnets..

FACILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
Indoors or outdoors, requires table space. Tables may be covered to protect them from low temperature glue. This lesson requires access to an electrical outlet.

SAFETY:
Students are given a short lesson for how to use the low temperature glue guns safely. Because the ends of the pipe cleaners are sometimes sharp, students are advised to fold over the ends of their pipe cleaners.
