Chemistry

LESSON DESCRIPTION:

Students create two strange substances. The first is a combi-
nation of corn starch and water and behaves like a solid and a liquid. The second substance is a slimy combination of white glue and Borax. Students then get to compare and contrast the properties of the two substances (texture, tensile strength, etc.).

TIME REQUIRED:
30-60 Minutes

OBJECTIVES:
This lesson can be customized for students to learn about mixtures versus compounds, chemical reactions, non-newtonian fluids, viscosity, polymerization, and the subtle difference between a solid and a liquid.

FACILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
Indoors or outdoors; requires table space; slightly messy.

SAFETY:
Students are warned not to ingest any of the chemicals they will be working with.
