LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Using a recloseable plastic bag as a reaction chamber, students explore
how chemicals can: 1) absorb or release heat as they dissolve in water,
2) can change colors in the presence of an acid or a base & 3) can
react to produce gases such as carbon dioxide.
TIME REQUIRED: One Hour
OBJECTIVES:
Students learn what it means for a chemical to dissolve. Students will
learn that as chemicals dissolve, they can absorb or produce heat. Older
students can learn how to use an indicator to detect the presence of an
acid or a base. As well, older students learn the difference between a
chemical simply dissolving into a solution and chemicals reacting.
FACILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
Seated table space for all participants.
SAFETY:
Students are warned not to ingest any of the chemicals used in this experiment.
Students are warned to use care in handling their recloseable bags so
that none of the chemicals spill. The vinegar, baking soda and cabbage
juice used in this experiment are very safe and non toxic. With the calcium
chloride (road salt), avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.
