Electricity and Magnetism

LESSON DESCRIPTION:

Using craftsticks, low temperature glue guns, lights, wires and batteries, students create electrically lit art creations. Students frequently create houses with Xmas lights, however students who wish to can create electrically lit Chanukah Menorahs or art creations with electric lights that are unrelated to any religious or cultural holidays.

TIME REQUIRED:
Two Hours

OBJECTIVES:
Students learn how to wire electric lights in series and parallel. Students learn to trouble shoot an electrical circuit. Students learn to use basic tools for doing wiring (wire cutters and wire strippers). Students learn how the amount of power available to load an individual component in a series circuit will generally drop as more loads are added to that circuit.

FACILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
Indoors or outdoors; requires table space; tables will be covered to protect them from the low temperature glue; requires access to an electrical outlet.

SAFETY:
Voltages involved in this experiment are minimal. Students are cautioned not to play with electrical outlets or anything involving household levels of electrical current.
