HEAT AND LIGHT

DRY ICE: Students do series of experiments with dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide). The students learn how to make a hollow ice egg, how soap bubbles can float in mid air, how to make fog, and how to make the dry ice produce eerie noises. In the course of the experiment, students can learn about solids, liquids, gasses, sublimation, condensation, dew point, freezing point, vibrations, clouds, greenhouse effect, and respiration. (1st thru 6th grade)

HEAT CONDUCTION: Students discover what makes a good heat insulator and a good heat conductor as they experiment with how well heat travels through a variety of materials (such as lead, copper, zinc, iron, aluminum, magnesium, plastic, wood and foam) using dry ice as a source of cold. (2nd through 6th grade)

WIND CHILL FACTOR: Students discover how evaporation of water and rubbing alcohol can feel in the wind. They also make their own device to measure wind speed. (1st through 6th grade)

LASERS AND MIRRORS: Students use their reflections in plastic mirrors to discover how to make a million eyes, a 'tunnel' through the desk, periscopes, kaleidoscopes, and how the 'fun house' mirrors work. A laser is used to show the light path. This lesson works best in rooms that can be darkened. (K thru 6th grade)

COLOR: Students discover the nature of additive and subtractive color through the use of filters and mirrors. We also experiment with ultraviolet light and fluorescent materials. This works best in a darkened room. (K through 6th grade)

GREENHOUSE EFFECT: Students discover what happens as skin and plants 'breathe', how to make fingerprints visible, the importance of pollution, and how hot it can become in a giant parachute greenhouse. (K through 5th grade)
