ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM

STATIC ELECTRICITY: Students learn about thunder, lightning, and electrons. They learn the three rules that all electrons follow. They discover how to 'bend water', separate a mixture of salt and pepper, and with one hair-raising experience, they discover the nature of static electricity. (K thru 6th)

AN ELECTRIFYING EXPERIENCE: In a cooperative exercise, students learn the basics of making an electric circuit as they discover what happens when colored holiday lights are hooked up in series and in parallel. They also get to check a wide variety of materials to see if they are conductors. (1st through 6th grade)

MAGNETIC CREATURES: Students create a magnetic creatures and habitats for them to "live" in using magnets and a variety of art materials. As students play with their magnetic creatures, they discover the magnetic concepts of attraction, repulsion, and polarity. (K thru 5th grade)

COMPASS: Students learn about the earth's magnetic field and the basics of how to give directions using compass points as the make their own compasses to find the earth's magnetic poles and then they try to guide their partner to the goal using only compass directions. (2nd through 6th grade)

BUCKET BRIGADE: Students gain insight into how an electrical circuit really works by modeling it by doing a cooperative exercise using water as the "electricity". The class makes a circle and with each student holding two cups, by pouring water in each others' cups, the class is able to model such electrical circuit components as "batteries", "lights", and "capacitors". (3rd through 6th grade)
